When Joy Stops Being the Goal

What if joy isn't something we achieve, but something that naturally emerges as we become increasingly organized around presence? A reflection on striving, Self, and remembering who holds the baton.

What if joy isn't something we achieve?

I've spent much of my adult life asking that question.

It has led me to books and retreats, teachers and trainings, coaching conversations, and quiet mornings with my journal. Each has offered a piece of the puzzle.

This week, during a mastermind call, someone spoke from a place that caught my attention. There was a lightness in her voice. A quiet joy that wasn't performative. She laughed easily. She seemed completely at home in herself.

For a moment, I noticed an old part of me whisper, I want that.

That familiar striving energy wanted to know how to get there.

Then another question arrived.

What if joy isn't something we achieve?

What if it is what naturally emerges as we become increasingly organized around presence?

Perhaps life isn't asking us to become someone different.

It may be inviting us to let our deepest, wisest, and most loving Self lead.

I found myself thinking about an orchestra.

The music doesn't emerge because one instrument plays louder than the others.

It emerges because every instrument is following the conductor.

Perhaps our inner world is much the same.

The parts of us that protect, strive, and achieve don't need to disappear. They simply aren't meant to conduct.

Maybe our work isn't to chase joy.

Maybe our work is to remember who holds the baton.

Over time, joy, creativity, wisdom, and love become less like fleeting experiences and more like the music of our lives.

Today's Principle

Presence is not a destination. It is an organizing principle. As Self increasingly leads, joy, creativity, wisdom, and love become less like experiences we chase and more like qualities that naturally emerge.

A Question to Carry

Where in my life am I still trying to achieve what can only emerge through presence?
