Before the Next Step

Before reaching for the next solution, what if we first returned Home? A reflection on orientation, trust, and what becomes possible from that place.

For years I was taught that life is fifty/fifty.

Fifty percent joy.

Fifty percent disappointment.

Moments of ease.

Moments of fear.

The invitation was to stop expecting life to feel good all the time.

There is wisdom in that.

But recently I've found myself wondering if another question lives beneath it.

Not whether life is fifty/fifty.

But how we meet the fifty.

For many years, I spent countless moments sitting with fear, frustration, sadness, and uncertainty.

Sometimes it felt like a heavy blanket.

Sometimes like a backpack I carried everywhere.

Over the years, I discovered many beautiful practices.

Movement.

Breath.

Somatic work.

Mindfulness.

Journaling.

Each offered something valuable.

Yet I began noticing something.

Often I was reaching for the practice because part of me desperately wanted the discomfort to disappear.

My Survivor wanted relief.

My Striver wanted to solve it.

The tools weren't the problem.

I simply hadn't realized that transformation begins before the practice does.

What if discomfort isn't always asking to be fixed?

What if it is asking to be met?

Not by the parts of us trying to escape it.

But by the deepest, wisest, and most loving part of ourselves.

The place I now call Home.

When I return there first, something begins to soften.

Curiosity replaces urgency.

Compassion replaces judgment.

Discernment becomes possible.

Only then do I ask,

What would serve this moment?

Sometimes the answer is movement.

Sometimes it's breath.

Sometimes it's simply sitting quietly.

The practice still matters.

But orientation comes first.

I'm beginning to believe that transformation doesn't begin with finding the right tool.

It begins by returning Home, where the next step has room to emerge.

Today's Principle

Transformation begins with orientation.

The tools matter.

The place from which we use them matters first.

A Question to Carry

When discomfort arrives...

Who in me is reaching for the solution?

What I'm Practicing

This week, I'm practicing returning Home before deciding what comes next.

The Homecoming Experience is the simple guided practice I've created to help us return to the deepest, wisest, and most loving part of ourselves.
